Rhetorical Appeals: Against Parental Notification

Now, it's time to use rhetorical appeals to create counterclaims. In the comments section below, write counterclaims for the arguments against parental notification that use one of the classical rhetorical appeals.

At the top of your comment: write "Counterclaim - and whether you are using ethos, pathos, or logos."

Just a reminder:

Counterclaim - a statement that is in opposition to the previous claim.  A counterclaim argues against the point being made.

Ethos this is based on credibility. If you respect the source of the argument, you might believe it. This appeal is based on being an authority, respected, and likeable.

Silly model - I am one of you.  I was raised in this neighborhood.  I live on your block.  I know, because I struggle with this issue too, that we need to start eating more cow’s liver in our diets.

Pathos - this is based on emotions. By getting the audience to engage with their feelings on the issue and using their emotions to convince them of your position.

Silly model - How can anyone imagine eating the bloody insides of something as cute and cuddly as a potbellied pig, or a little baby chick? Anyone who could think of killing an animal so precious and adorable must have no feelings at all.

Logos - this is based on logic and reasoning. By having strong facts (evidence) and explaining the facts in a reasonable way that can be understood and followed by the audience, you can convince them of your position.

Silly model - By switching to a diet in which we eat every part of the animals being consumed for food we will reap a number of benefits.  We will be able to lower our carbon footprint, decreasing pollution, by using the entire animal and avoiding waste.  Our grocery bills will also be greatly reduced because the cost of many of these parts of the animal are low.

    Ethos

If you are under 18, your state may require one or both of your parents to give permission for your abortion or be told of your decision prior to the abortion. In most states with these requirements:

You can ask a judge to excuse you from getting permission or telling your parent or guardian. (This is called a "judicial bypass.")
A legal guardian can give permission or be notified in place of a parent.
If you meet legal rules showing that you are independent of the care and control of your parents or a guardian, you do not need to get their permission or notify them.

I strongly respect this argument because some people dont want their parents to know descriminate abuse and make them have an abortion. So with these things you can do to make you and your unborn child safe and have your parent not know that you are pregnant even though your mother or father would eventually find out.

  2. Ethos-

Listen i am a teenager and i know that if you do not tell your parents that you are having sex you will be better off. I did some research and i found out that 90% of females who have had sex,and told their parents were either thrown out the house or ran away because they know that their parents were abusive towards that subject. Also i know someone who had sex an got pregnant and told her mom and her mom threw her out. But here dad on the other hand tried to talk to her mom and she would not listen. But her dad talked to her and he told her if she is having sex to always protect herself. He took her to the doctor to test her to see if she has any diseases or if anything had gone wrong with her.

    1. Pathos-
The parents wants the best for their kids and I think that they should have the rights from their kids to tell them about problems and decisions that they made so that their parents can help and connect with them.

  3. Ethos - I believe and respect the reason why people don't tell their parents that they are going to have an abortion because they are scared to tell them they are pregnant so they rather abuse it by getting an abortion so their parents won't know they were having a baby. On the other hand, if they did tell them that they are pregnant some of the parents would of kill them and the baby sadly so that's why they have abortion.

    1. Counter Claims - I disagree because if you do tell your parents your going to be in big trouble and they will also want you to abort the baby. You better off not telling them and let them find out themselves when the baby is born.

    2. counterclaim- I understand what you are saying but sometimes parents tend to take things to the next extent and that's what teens are trying to avoid. Yes it would make more sense for kids to avoid doing things that cause the drama but sometimes things happen unexpectedly.

    3. Counter claim- i disagree with that because if your 18 then you don't need your parents for not you just go to the doctor and make the discetion of you either have a abortion are you keep it so i think the person can make there own mind up......

      Counterclaim-

I strongly disagree that you should tell them because if you do tell them there going judge you and think of you a different type of way. Could change your whole relationship with them, could actually change everything.

  5. Ethos - I believe and respect the reason why people don't tell their parents that they are going to have an abortion because they are scared to tell them they are pregnant so they rather abuse it by getting an abortion so their parents won't know they were having a baby. On the other hand

    1. counterclaim - i agree but what if something goes wrong during the abortion ? who's fault is it going to be ? on the other hand i understand why they are scared of telling their parents but they weren't scared to have sex.

    2. They should have had that discussion before they became pregnant. They should be scared because they are teens and they have no idea what to do and it is a scary decision. Teens need to have these conversation as preteens, so when they get in the situation they will know what to do. They should be able to trust their parents and communicate comfortably.

Claim: They should not tell their parents because we want many of them to get vaccinated with the Hpv vaccine.

Logos - There's a lot of people that's having abortions. It's overwhelming. There have been more than 53 million abortions performed in the United States since Roe v. Wade was decided back in 1973.

When you total up all forms of abortion, including those caused by the abortion drug RU 486, the grand total comes to more than a million abortions performed in the United States every single year.

One very shocking study found that 86 percent of all abortions are done for the sake of convenience.According to the Guttmacher Institute, the average cost of a first trimester abortion at the ten week mark is $451.

A Department of Homeland Security report that was released in January 2012 says that if you are “anti-abortion”, you are a potential terrorist. Unfortunately, there have also been other government reports that have also identified “anti-abortion” protesters as potential threats.

    1. Counter claims - First off, parents can not trust parents. Another thing is that they do need to tell them because if they are living in their household they have to let them know.

  10. Ethos:
Some teenagers think that they are grow. So they already make many decisions with out asking their parents. If parents already don't know about whats going on then they don't need to know.

    1. Counter claims - The reason why teenagers think they are grown is because of their childhood. Another thing is that not all teenagers think they are grown. Lastly, they do need to know sooner or later because they are living in their household.

  12. They should not make this a law because it forces a relationship on kids that they are probably not ready for. The kids need to create a relationship with their parents that they are comfortable with. If this is made a law then the kids relationship that was forced will fade away and that will make many parents sad they want a relationship that you grow into. Its like not giving a kid freedom because they do not deserve it they need to earn it. But, if they grow to the age were they can do it without the parents consent they did not earn it. So in this situation the parent needs to earn the relationship not just get it because of this law.

    1. i agree with you on the relationships part but they should tell because kids now a days think they are grown an gt pregnant and do what they want without there parents so they should make a law
