Arguments Against Parental Notification

We've discussed some of the features that a strong argument needs to have, taken a look at some articles that make arguments on both sides of the issue, and evaluated the quality of those arguments.

Now, it's time for you to do some research.

Using the links below, or your own internet research skills, find articles that argue the following:
Minors should not need to notify their parents to access sexual health services.

Remember, that sexual health services include: birth control, prophylactics such as condoms, abortion, and sex education.

Your Task:

1. Locate an article that supports the pro-notification argument.
2. In the comments section, do the following:

  • Paste the web address for the article.
  • Explain what claim it is making.
  • Write down the evidence that it uses.
  • Explain the reasoning that it uses.
3. Submit your comment, and then start looking for more.

Claim - In the passage the clain is that "teenage pregnancy rate, birth rate and abortion rate have all dropped sharply since their respective peaks in the 1990s, according to new research by the Guttmacher Institute, a nonprofit organization focused on reproductive health."

Evidence - In the passage the evidence is "the teenage pregnancy rate dropped 51% between 1990 and 2010, according to the report. The 2010 rate of 57.4 pregnancies per 1,000 teenage girls and women 15-19 also represents a drop of 15% since 2008 alone."

Reasoning - The reasoning for this passage is that this "report demonstrates that, in fact, fewer teens are becoming pregnant than at any time since tracking of this data began — reflecting our finding that both birthrates and abortion rates among teens have steadily declined."

claim:I’ve had teenagers. My kids are grown and they were boys, but I know if they did something they were ashamed of, if they could figure out a way to cover it up, they’d do it.”
evidence:“You can’t get your daughter or son’s ears pierced under the age of 17 without parental consent; you can’t get a tattoo without parental consent. To me it’s unconscionable that you can’t give an aspirin to a child in school without parental consent, but they can have major surgery without parental notification.”

Claim: Young teenage girls can get an abortion without parental consent and without their spouse even knowing that they are going to have their child aborted.

Evidence: "We are dedicated to providing confidential and private medical care."

Reasoning: "Our own female recognizes that a teenagers pregnancy is her own responsibility."

Claim - Parent involvement laws cannot conjure love and support for pregnant teens where there's violence in the home; what they do is reduce access to abortion and increase the likelihood of more complicated later-term abortions.

Evidence - "Ever since Roe v. Wade and the Webster decision, which was the first major decision that said you could pass parental consent laws, the strategy has been to chip away and make accessibility as hard as possible in the hopes that you prevent some women from having abortions, and this law is one of those strategies," Brigid Leahy, director of government relations at Planned Parenthood Illinois told Truthout. "This doesn't make things safer, just harder."

Reasoning - A woman undergoes an ultrasound by a doctor before an abortion.

Claim- I am against abortion but the people from this website are not sure if it should be legalized or not.

"he debate over whether or not abortion should be a legal option continues to divide Americans long after the US Supreme Court’s 7-2 decision on Roe v. Wade declared the procedure a "fundamental right" on Jan. 22, 1973.''

Claim:Teens should'nt have to notify their parents before having a abortion
Evidence:it allow girls to put their health in danger by doing self abortions instead of going to the doctor because there scared to tell their parents

Claim: "According to federal law, teens do have the right to obtain and use birth control products without a parent's permission."

Evidence: "As parents, even if we trust that our kids are mature enough to engage in a sexual relationship and allow them their privacy, we should never keep our own views about sexuality-and the facts about contraception-a secret."

Reasoning: "In my experience counseling families and young people, I've learned first hand that many teenagers do not want to talk about their sex life with their parents, while many parents believe that their children should tell them everything."

claim: this girl is 16 she didnt know she was pregnant and so she went to her school nurse office they took her weight and everything. Then they relayed the information to a doctor and made sure it was all right to give the girl Plan B One-Step, the morning-after pill. The nurse checked to see if the girl’s parents had returned the opt-out form that was supposed to have gone home at the beginning of the year. They had not, so she was free to take the pill. because she was hiding it from her parents cause she know her parents was going to beat her..
